Press Release: NY State of Health Offers Health Plan Enrollment, Information to College Students

Effort Marks National Youth Enrollment Day: December 10, 2016

Albany, NY – (December 05, 2016) - NY State of Health, the state’s official health plan Marketplace, is offering a series of enrollment and informational events this week at more than 25 college campuses across New York State. In recognition of National Youth Enrollment Day, December 10, 2016, certified assistors will be on college campuses to speak with students about how to get affordable, quality health coverage and enroll in a health plan through the Marketplace. Students will have the opportunity to enroll or make an appointment to enroll at a later date.

“College students lead very active lifestyles, so we’ve made it easy for them to learn about and enroll in a health plan through NY State of Health by bringing enrollment opportunities to them,” said NY State of Health Executive Director Donna Frescatore. “Our assistors can educate students about their low cost health insurance options available through the Marketplace and remind them that the time to enroll for 2017 coverage is now.”

Details on the more than 25 colleges participating in National Youth Enrollment Day activities with NY State of Health can be found here: http://info.nystateofhealth.ny.gov/events

National Youth Enrollment Day is a national movement, led by Enroll America and Young Invincibles, where young people, communities, and organizations come together in a unified effort to ensure young adults know about their healthcare options and enroll in health coverage.  To maximize informational and enrollment opportunities for students, NY State of Health has expanded its effort to the entire week leading up to National Youth Enrollment Day, December 10.

According to Enroll America, nearly 1 in 5 young adults don’t have health insurance. College students have choices when it comes to health insurance: stay on their parent’s health plan; buy their own plan; or get coverage through a new job. Young adults can find a variety of health coverage options through NY State of Health.

All health plans offered through NY State of Health cover preventive care, such as routine doctor visits and screenings, at no additional cost. The Essential Plan offers quality coverage from brand name companies and is available for $20 or $0 per month with no deductibles. Individuals with incomes up to $23,760 may be eligible for the Essential Plan.

New Yorkers must enroll by December 15 for coverage beginning on January 1, 2017. Open enrollment for 2017 ends on January 31.
