On-Campus Events Help Students Understand and Enroll in Health Coverage
ALBANY, N.Y. (December 5, 2017) - NY State of Health, the state’s official health plan Marketplace, is partnering with community colleges to host more than 30 on-campus enrollment and informational events to highlight National Youth Enrollment Day, sponsored by Young Invincibles, on December 8, 2017. Certified in-person assistors will be at more than 20 campuses December 5th – 8th to answer questions, schedule appointments and enroll students in quality, affordable health coverage.
“Many college students who do not have coverage through employment or a parent’s policy go through their college years concerned about being able to afford health care,” said NY State of Health Executive Director Donna Frescatore. “We thank these colleges for allowing our assistors to be on campus to help students understand the health insurance options available to them and help them apply for and enroll in low-cost or free coverage through the Marketplace.”

According to the Census American Community Survey, New York’s uninsured rate for young adults 19-25 has dropped from 17% in 2013 to 8% in 2016. Still, many students may not know that if they file taxes on their own, eligibility for financial assistance is determined based on only the student’s household income.
More than 4 million – more than 1 in 5 New Yorkers – have enrolled in quality, affordable health insurance coverage through NY State of Health. Depending on income, students may qualify for low-cost or free coverage. For eligible lower-income New Yorkers, the cost of the Essential Plan remains $20 or $0 for comprehensive, high quality coverage with no deductible and low consumer cost sharing.
New Yorkers must enroll by December 15 for coverage beginning on January 1, 2018. Open Enrollment for 2018 ends on January 31.
